Growing a Bean

Couldn't make it to the Royal Botanic Gardens?
No problem! Plant your own beans at home.

What you need:

  • Broad been seeds
  • Clear cup
  • Paper towel

Steps

  1. Line the inside of the cup with a paper towel.
  2. Tuck the bean between the cup and paper towel, about halfway up the cup.
  3. Squirt the paper towel with water, enough to wet it, but not too much! Remember to spray the paper towel every few days or when it gets dry.
  4. Leave the cup in an area that receives sunlight. Record results everyday by measuring, drawing or by taking a photograph.
  5. Create a flipbook of your bean growing or ask your teacher for the instructions on how to make a time-lapse video.
  6. Replant your bean into the garden when it is big enough.
