Science in the Swamp

After a two-year hiatus, our ever-popular Science in the Swamp event returns to Centennial Parklands on Sunday 21 August – for a free family day out jam-packed full of science, fun and discovery!

This National Science week, learn about the Parklands, meet our native animal residents and let your curiosity guide you as Dickens Lawn transforms into a pop-up village of scientific delights!
 
Find your inner scientist through hands-on, family-friendly science experiments and displays, learn bush survival skills with Greater Sydney Parklands’ educators at our Bush Craft Village, and be sure to keep an eye out for the incredible roaming dinosaur, who returns for a prehistoric tour through the swamp!
 
As you visit over 25 awe-inspiring stalls, you’ll meet real life scientists, biologists, geologists and researchers on a family day you won’t forget. It’s free to attend with food trucks, picnic areas and fun science activities to entertain both adults and children alike!

Science in the Swamp is a free community family event - everyone is welcome to attend!
Yes, Science in the Swamp will run rain or shine. It may be cancelled in extreme weather conditions. If the event is cancelled, a message will be posted on our website and social media channels (Facebook and Twitter), so make sure you follow us to stay up to date.
Absolutely! Dogs are welcome to join the fun. However, we ask that you keep your dog on a leash at all times during the event. We also ask that you keep your pooch away from food stalls at all times.
Yes – there will be a number of food trucks and plenty of picnic areas available, so families can settle in and make the most of the day.
No – you do not need a ticket to attend. Science in the Swamp is a FREE community event!
Parking at Centennial Park is limited, so we strongly recommend taking public transport to get to Science in the Swamp:
  • Buses 333, 440, 355 stopping at Oxford St before York St, Bondi Junction (Stop 202260) Walk to destination: 1.2km
  • Lightrail L2 stopping at Royal Randwick (Stop 2031196) Walk to destination: 1.5km
Yes. There is free parking available at the Parklands, though this is limited. Please follow directions given by traffic controllers on the day. 
Yes, accessible parking will be available. People requiring accessible parking will need to make themselves known to a traffic controllers and present a valid mobility parking permit.
We that recommend you bring:
  • Re-fillable drink bottle and coffee cup - you can fill these up at any of the free, fresh drinking water stations 
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Umbrella, in case of rain
  • Cash or cards to purchase fresh food and other products
  • Bags to carry any items you wish to take home
  • A picnic blanket
