School & Community Volunteering Opportunities

Are you looking for a venue to host your school or community groups community service program? Join us at Centennial Park to make a difference now and for the future.

At Centennial Parklands, we believe in the power of community and the profound impact that nature can have on our wellbeing. Our Community Service Volunteering Program offers schools and community organisations a unique opportunity to contribute to the environment, enhance school dynamics, and foster a sense of purpose among participants.

We can offer te following volunteering opportunities:

  • Environmental volunteering: Engage in bush regeneration, mulching, and replanting native species, all vital to improving local biodiversity and the health of our ecosystems.
  • Heritage volunteering: Help maintain and restore heritage-listed sites, such as painting and repairing historic horse fencing.
  • Clean-up volunteering: Assist in removing rubbish and debris, ensuring our parklands remain pristine and welcoming for all visitors.

FAQs
  • Environmental volunteering in Centennial Parklands can involve any and all of the following: as a team, pulling out weeds and clearing introduced and unwanted plants from native bushland using loppers, secateurs and saws, moving and spreading mulch, planting and watering shrubs, grasses and trees, creating areas of habitat using logs, sticks and branches and removing rubbish. You’ll be using hand tools, loading the ute, carrying bags of weeds and rubbish from the site and clearing up using rakes and brooms. The sites are bushland areas with thick vegetation, but have easy, level access.
  • Heritage volunteering in Centennial Parklands involves painting. Working in teams you will clean and repair and damage to the fence, prepare the surfaces for painting, paint the rails and posts with white paint and clean up using recycled water.
  • Clean Up Volunteering in Centennial Parklands involves walking around the park removing rubbish from the open areas, playgrounds, picnic areas and pond verges using gloves, rubbish pickers and bags, sorting the rubbish for recyclables and disposing of the rubbish in onsite bins.

Participants need a reasonable level of fitness and mobility as the sites are vegetated and surfaces uneven, but there are jobs for all people within the general limitations of an outdoor site. If your organisation has people with mobility issues or other disability, we have volunteering opportunities in accessible areas such as our community nursery.

The work can be dirty, muddy and messy so work clothes are preferred, rather than a good school uniform. Wear long pants and long sleeves if possible, a hat and sturdy, closed shoes. Gloves will be provided.

We allocate the service volunteers to areas of the park where work is needed and to undertake essential activities that we may not have capacity to achieve otherwise. However, if you have a special request, such as working somewhere you have worked before to check the progress of plantings, then please provide a comment in your booking sheet and we will try to accommodate you.

The parklands are free of snakes, other dangerous animals and significant risks. You are working in nature, so a reasonable level of care is required, and you will be inducted into safe tool use, handling, lifting and moving techniques.
