This Geography program aims to give students an opportunity to visit and explore one of Sydney’s most loved green spaces.

Early Stage 1 HSIE:Geography

Students step into the Wild Play Garden to explore, investigate and make sense of the environment through hands-on, engaging experiences. This dynamic outdoor space invites curiosity and active learning, providing a rich setting for students to observe, question and discover.

Through activities such as construction and guided exploration, students identify and describe natural and human features of the space. They consider how the environment is designed and used, recognise patterns within the landscape, and explore how people interact with and care for places.

This excursion supports students to observe, record and represent features of a place using geographical information, while building a strong sense of connection to place. A key focus is the development of topic-specific vocabulary, enabling students to describe environments and their features with increasing confidence

Learning intention:

Students will:

  • explore the natural and built features of the Wild Play Garden, considering what makes it special and how it is cared for
  • identify, map and describe natural and human features within a space
  • recognise places that are meaningful to them and reflect on how they can care for these places

Activities

  • Discovery Walk - Natural and human features. Students listen, observe and notice sounds, colours and textures in the environment. They consider what makes the WildPlay Garden Special.
  • Mud Mapping: Use the colour matching activity as a toold to discover the WildPlay Garden. Students then map the area noting natural and human features, places they think are special and features that show people care for this place.
  • Mini Shelter Building: Students listen to a story and then build mini shelters. Students develop an understanding of how places are special for people.
