Ponds Walk - Stages 1 and 2

The Ponds Walk creates a modern and accessible entry to Centennial Park from Alison Road (right near the Royal Randwick Light Rail station) through our celebrated pond network to Grand Drive.

  • Project: Ponds Walk - Stages 1 and 2

  • Location: Kensington Pond to the Learner’s Cycleway

  • Project timing: February – August 2021

  • Project owner: Centennial Parklands

Project description - Stage 1

The Ponds Walk first tabled in the Centennial Park Master Plan 2040 as a new ponds trail, to improve pedestrian access and provide opportunities to engage with the pond network.

The first stage of the Ponds Walk connects the Kensington Pond footbridge to the back of the Learner’s Cycleway at Fearnley Grounds. The walk provides the public with a link to Alison Road via the newly-reinstated Kensington Pond footbridge.

Construction on the footbridge was completed in early 2021. Stage 1 Pond Walk works have been completed in July 2021, delivering on key recommendations from the Centennial Park Master Plan for improved access, landscape quality, environmental sustainability and recreational opportunity.

Location

Stage 1 of the Ponds Walk is located in the southern section of Centennial Park, between Alison Road and Fearnley Grounds - the location is shown in yellow on the map below.

Project works

Stage 1 works include the installation of a screw piled steel frame pathway with fiberglass mesh decking and timber kerb. The pathway design replicates the same design as the Kensington Pond Footbridge.

The bridge and boardwalk are adjacent to a remnant area of the critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. The remnant area was carefully looked after through the implementation of a protection measures plan, and additionally, we have put in plantings in the surrounding area composed of native species for enhancement of this area.

Construction work commenced in March 2021, and was completed early July 2021.

Project description - Stage 2

Stage 2 of the Ponds Walk will link patrons with the existing asphalt pathway network to the back of the Fearnley Grounds Precinct. Once completed, the Ponds Walk will provide one continuous path network from Alison Road into Grand Drive. Stage 2 works are far less detailed and reverts back to the asphalt pathway installed, roughly 60 metres in length.

Project timing

Stage 2 construction works started in June and were completed, ahead of schedule, on 19 August 2021.
