Tree removals in Centennial Park, Tuesday 24 March and Wednesday 25 March 2026

Greater Sydney Parklands is carrying out essential tree removal works at Centennial Park on Tuesday 24 March and Wednesday 25 March 2026.

Works will take place between 7:00am and 3:00pm in the Musgrave Avenue area, including Musgrave Pond, One More Shot Pond and Willow Pond. The works involve the removal of trees that have been storm-damaged or are in poor condition, to maintain safety in the park. The trees being removed are weed species.

Temporary road and footpath closures will be in place across sections of Musgrave Avenue during the works, from Grand Drive to Musgrave Gate. Traffic management and signage will be in place, and visitors are asked to follow directions from staff and on-site signage during this time.

There may also be some temporary noise from chainsaws, a woodchipper and stump grinder while works are underway.

Tree replacement strategy

Centennial Parklands receive over 30 million visits annually and public safety is our top priority. The tree population of Centennial Parklands is now over 16,000 with 234 different species.

As trees decline and reach the end of their life, the risk of branch failure or a tree becoming structurally unsound increases and needs to be closely monitored and managed. Eventually a tree may need to be removed once other tree management strategies become insufficient for public safety or sustaining the health of a tree. Learn more about ‘Circle of (a tree) Life’

In the next 40 years, a large percentage of our tree population, especially those that are already mature or over-mature will need to be replaced due to their terminal decline. To combat this, we plant trees annually to succeed trees reaching the end of the lifecycle. We aim to replace all trees.
