Moore Park sports field closure

Published on 16 Sep 2024
Greater Sydney Parkland (GSP) resolved to resurface the existing Moore Park synthetic sports field primarily for Club competition, community use and training.

Closed sports field location

An assessment of the existing field was carried to determine the current state of the field, expected lifespan, risk reduction measures, market options, and the implications of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer Report on potential synthetic turf field upgrade.

The existing synthetic field at Moore Park was built in 2015 (on top of an old asphalt netball courts) and has been used intensively by various sport and community groups. Following a recent site investigation carried out by an industry expert, it was found that the field has aged more quickly than expected. The playing surface presents obvious injury risks such as seams coming apart, trip hazards and worn / balding patches all across the field. Also, it is no longer deemed suitable for any high-impact sports due to the aging of the synthetic yarn / grass.

It was recommended for an immediate replacement and upgrade of the field to ensure continued safe use of the facilities.  Without replacement, the facility will need to be progressively closed to sport, which will severely impact community use and reduce the significant revenue derived by GSP from sport bookings.

Works to resurface the existing synthetic field include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Site establishment;
  • Remove, dispose and recycle infill within the synthetic turf system;
  • Remove, dispose and recycle existing synthetic turf playing surface;
  • Repair existing subbase i.e. rubber shock pad as necessary;
  • Repair stormwater drainage system as necessary;
  • Supply and install new synthetic turf playing surface;
  • Supply and install new organic infill into the new synthetic turf system; and
  • Site reinstatement.
