COVID-19: Temporary Park & Ride at Showground Field in Moore Park

Published on 20 May 2020

As part of the NSW Government’s COVIDSafe Transport Plan, Transport for NSW, with support from Centennial Parklands, has been operating a temporary Park & Ride free commuter car park from Showground Field in Moore Park since the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pop-up parking initiative was designed to support workers returning to offices in the Sydney CBD by providing commuters with an easy connection to the city by bike, on-foot or by public transport.

From the car park commuters can walk 25 minutes to the city using the Albert ‘Tibby’ Cotter Walkway, continuing down Devonshire Street towards Central Station. By bike, commuters can also use the Albert ‘Tibby’ Cotter Walkway or the new pop-up cycleway along Moore Park Road and Fitzroy Street to connect with existing cycleways and continue their trip into the city.

The Moore Park Masterplan will see the progressive removal of on-grass parking at Moore Park and as part of that plan no temporary parking will occur near the Kippax Lake area of Moore Park, at the northern end of the Park.  Since event parking ceased in the Kippax Lake area, it has proved to be an extremely important green public space for people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pop-up car park location: Showground Field, Driver Avenue in Moore Park entry via Lang Road or Moore Park Road. Capacity for up to 980 vehicles.

Operating hours: Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) from 6am to 10pm

Car park operating dates: 25 May 2020 until 1 April 2021

Cost: Free

Notice of pop-up car park closure:
As COVID-19 restrictions have eased and public transport capacities have increased, the pop-up car park is no longer required to operate and will close from 1 April 2021.

The last day of car park operations will be Thursday 1 April from 6am to 10pm, after this date the car park will no longer operate on weekdays as a free pop-up car park for CBD commuters.

Commuters can be easily accommodated by existing public transport services to and from the Sydney CBD.

Car park users are encouraged to use trip planning tools to find the best way to and from their workplace by public transport or the various parking options in the Sydney CBD.
