Professional Development: Geography Outdoors (Primary K-6)

Teaching Geography in an outdoor environment aligns with place-based education and encourages student's immersion and appreciation for their in local environments.  In this 2 hour professional development course, our Centennial Parkland Educators will give teachers the skills and readiness to teach Geography confidently in an outdoor environment through the use of geographical tools, field work, visual representation and the use of equipment. 

Delivered by Centennial Parklands Education Staff in our outdoor classroom, this program will be held mostly outside. Participants will be equipped with the skills to teach Geography outdoors, promote learning, achievement and overall engagement from their students.  Learning in authentic environments like the outdoor classroom at Centennial Park foster students sense of wonder and expand their natural curiosity about the world around them.

Participants will gain an understanding of:

- The benefits of outdoor learning/nature play for Geography education

- How to establish an outdoor classroom to teach Geography content and skills

- Outdoor learning activities that can be linked to the Geography K-6 Syllabus

- Practical outdoor skills for Geography fieldwork e.g. mapping, fieldwork tools, visual representations.

Completing Geography Outdoors (Primary K-6) Professional Development course will contribute 2 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and assessment of NSW Curriculum addressing standard descriptor 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

We are seeking expressions of interest to deliver either our full-day 5 hour NESA accredited Introduction to Outdoor Learning, Bush School and Nature Play program, or 2 or 3 hour professional development courses.
