Minister announces Grant to aid Olympians
27 June 2008
The NSW Minister for Sport, the Hon. Graham West MP, today announced he was allocating a total of $90,000 to equestrian sport to help NSW riders in their preparation for the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games.
$70,000 of that will be directed to EFA supported rider/horse combinations who left Australia this year to travel overseas in an attempt to qualify for the 2008 Olympics following the cancellation of many selection events in Australia due to equine influenza.
The remaining $20,000 is being injected into the Australian Youth Olympic Festival to help sustain the development of future Olympians.
Karen Tinney, wife of Olympic Gold Medalist and contender for selection this year, Stuart Tinney, joined Minister West, Mr John Coates of the AOC, David Lawrence, Chair of the EFA NSW, Wendy Cohen, CEO EFA NSW and Mr Steve Corbett, Director and Chief Executive of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust at the media conference at the Centennial Park Equestrian Centre.
Karen said the money offered to Stuart would help immensely in his horses' continued training whilst in Europe and she thanked the Minister and the NSW Government for this generous support.
