Golden Oldies World Rugby Announced

21 May 2008

Media Release

The world’s biggest rugby Festival will return for the second time to Sydney in 2010.

Up to 6,000 participants from 18 countries are expected for the 18th Air New Zealand Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival in Sydney from 26 September to 3 October 2010.

The 2010 Festival was announced today jointly by Air New Zealand and Tourism New South Wales.

Organisers expect over 200 teams from 18 nations to attend the week long Festival that will be based at the Centennial Parklands near the Sydney CBD.

Making the announcement today, the Minister of Tourism, Hon Matt Brown said that Sydney’s bid had beaten a number of contenders to host the event.

The Festival has the active support and endorsement of John O’Neill, the CEO of the Australian Rugby Union and Chairman of Events New South Wales. New South Wales Rugby, New South Wales State Government, Tourism New South Wales and the Lord Mayor of Sydney have also pledged their support.

“Sydney is Australia’s global city and international gateway,” said the Premier of New South Wales, the Hon Morris Iemma.

“It is Australia’s financial and media centre. It’s our nation’s food, fashion, sport and lifestyle capital and the most culturally diverse city in the Asia Pacific.

“New South Wales is also Australia’s rugby heartland with traditionally more than half of Australia’s rugby playing numbers. On the global rugby stage Sydney hosted the prime matches in Rugby World Cup 2003 including the opening match, semifinals and final.”

Sydney would provide an exciting and diverse attraction for Golden Oldies participants, said the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore MP.

“Sydney is recognised as one of the world’s most exciting cities, rendowed for its natural beauty and a multitude of pursuits available to visitors and residents alike.

“The city’s magnificent harbour setting, its cultural life, plentiful shopping, restaurants, cafes, fresh foods and friendly people make the Sydney experience a memorable one indeed.”

Air New Zealand has a proud history of supporting Golden Oldies Rugby and has helped champion the Golden Oldies Movement and its community since its inception back in 1979.
