$625,000 upgrade to Queens Park completed

The Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust (Trust) has invested over $600,000 in the largest improvement project ever seen at Queens Park. The works included repairs to an existing footpath, improved access and refurbishment of the existing amenities block, a new fence around the playground with an accessible entrance and construction of a shared pathway linking the northern side of the park to the southern side forming part of Regional Cycle Route 23.

To complement these works, Waverley Council has committed $25,000 on upgrading entry points to the park and linking to existing street crossings.

Steve Corbett, Director and Chief Executive of the Trust said, ‘These improvements have been designed to encourage a more diverse use of this busy park. The shared cycleway accommodates strollers, pedestrians, dog walkers and cyclists and increased accessibility means more people can enjoy all this park has to offer.’

Waverley Mayor George Newhouse also welcomed the improvements. ‘I’m pleased that Waverley Council and the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust have partnered up to fix the footpath to provide disability access to Queens Park. This popular park is one of Sydney’s showcase parks and can now be enjoyed by all. This is a win-win situation for everyone involved.’

Queens Park is home to a wide range of sporting and school groups which use the park on a daily basis. The upgrade has been carried out as part of the Queens Park Master Plan providing better amenity and safety for the over one million visits made to the park annually.

On Wednesday 8 August 2007, the Trust and Waverley Council joined local residents at the corner of Darley and York Roads at Queens Park for a morning tea to celebrate these improvements.

A tree kindly donated by Waverley Council to the Centennial Parklands Foundation was also planted Mayor George Newhouse on the day. The tree was planted in support of the Tree Replacement Program
which raises much-needed funds to help replace trees which are aging or diseased in the Parklands.
