New $400,000 Education Precinct Opens

A brand new $400,000 education precinct that focuses on environmental sustainability and heritage was officially opened in Centennial Park today.
NSW Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene said the new, sustainable and all-weather facility is located in the heart of the beautiful park.
“Anyone who has been to Centennial Parklands knows it’s one of the most significant urban park assets in NSW,” Mr Greene said.
“This is a $400,000 investment in building environmental education in Sydney and the current education program of 12,000 people is now expected to grow,” he said.
Mr Greene said the entire project is about sustainability, even the built parts of the site.
“The main building is a reused demountable, while decking was constructed from a wood/plastic composite and the site itself was previously a waste disposal site, meaning the whole thing was built without any loss of any green space in the park.
“The precinct also incorporates a multi-functional learning centre, a community plant nursery and sustainable learning features like composting bins and rainwater tanks.
“Of course, it’s also next to the wonderful ponds and woodlands within the Park,” he said.
The Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust’s Director and Chief Executive, Mr Steve Corbett, said the Trust plans to further develop this site to include a discovery ecosystem trail and additional recycling elements in the garden.
“The precinct provides opportunities for educational institutions and the community plant nursery will allow volunteers, students and Parklands staff to propagate threatened Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub and plants for educational use and within the Parklands,” he said.
“It’s very important to note this project would not have been possible without the assistance of funding from our sponsor Visy, the Centennial Parklands Foundation and the NSW Government,” Mr Corbett said.
