During 2005, Centennial Parklands implemented a Visitor Safety Program over a three-month period from August 2005 to October 2005. One element of the Program included targeting speeding vehicles.
Comments and surveys undertaken during this period identified speeding as an area of concern to Park users. The Parklands has approximately 5.5 million visits per year and 70% of visitors travel to the Parklands by car.
As a result of the Program, Centennial Parklands will be trialling traffic slowing measures in the form of speed humps, kerbing and traffic islands at a number of selected intersections and stop signs within Centennial Park. Police are in support of this action and advised on the best methods to use.
The initial traffic slowing measure trial, in the form of a speed hump, will be located at the junction of Grand and Parkes Drives near Café corner, with works to start Monday, 13 March 2006.
A further two trial speed humps will be located at York Road and Randwick Gates entrance after the Parkes Drive works has been completed and monitored for a suitable period.
Temporary water filled barriers will be trialled at the junction of Hamilton Drive and Grand Drive to align the intersection on Tuesday, 14 March 2006. This will also be trialled for a suitable period and if successful, a permanent kerb and traffic island will be installed.
The traffic slowing measures will assist in improving visitor safety, cycle and vehicle management in Centennial Park.
