Moore Park Traffic and Parking
The Moore Park Precinct is a unique parkland environment providing world class venues which host spectacular events. The Precinct venues includes the Hordern Pavilion, Royal Hall of Industries, the Family Entertainment Precinct near Fox Studios, Moore Park Golf Course and Driving Range, Aussie Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground. The popularity of these venues means the surrounding road system is subject to heavy traffic use during normal times. The Moore Park Precinct attracts more than 13 million visitors each year to a diverse range of special events at venues and in the Parklands.
While public transport and car pooling is actively encouraged and promoted, many visitors still choose to drive to the Moore Park Precinct. As with any large scale event this can lead to increased use of the roadway system in and around the Precinct.
Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust (Trust) works in partnership with the Precinct venues and authorities aiming to ensure the smooth operation of the Moore Park Precinct during these times. However, the very nature of the road system surrounding the event area means that although traffic movement within the car park may be smoothly regulated, the volume of commuting traffic on the surrounding RTA arterial road system may lead to delays.
The management of traffic to and from events in the Moore Park Precinct requires the coordination of the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), NSW Police, State Transit Authority (STA), Ministry of Transport and the Precinct venues. The phasing of traffic lights during this process by the RTA and on-the-ground police attendance is a crucial support to the management of the flow of traffic, especially leaving events.
Events within the Precinct can attract up to 5,500 parked vehicles at a time and the length of time taken to exit the Precinct is consistent with the exit times from Sydney Olympic Park. The surrounding RTA arterial road system, which can become congested with non–event traffic, has a significant effect on the egress of traffic from the Precinct parking areas.
The advent of the Harbour Tunnel and Eastern Distributor link through the Moore Park Precinct has seen this route being favoured by motorists which exacerbates the traffic congestion on Moore Park Road and surrounding arterial roads.
The Trust is working towards long—term sustainable solutions with Precinct venues including the development of an integrated Precinct plan this financial year which will focus on addressing pedestrian, traffic and parking management in and around the Precinct.
Visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transport to make their journey easier and more relaxed.
