Equine Influenza
Welcome back! Horses return to Centennial Park
On Friday 5 October, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) announced that the Centennial Parklands Equestrian Centre is no longer under quarantine restrictions. This means that the horses in the Centre have been given a clean bill of health and as such are allowed to enter Centennial Park and use the Horse Track and Equestrian Grounds.
Although movement restrictions are still in place for all horses across the state, it means that the riding schools can resume their operations and horse owners can ride through the Park.
Pony rides, a popular school holiday activity, will resume on Saturday 13 October with many other riding programs resuming shortly.
Please contact individual riding schools for more details .
For more information please refer to the press release issued by the DPI.
Horse riding in Centennial Park is one of the Parklands most distinguishing features. In the tradition of great English parks the Grand Drive was designed to feature the equestrian or carriage drive as well as the pedestrian walk. Indeed, it was probably the first time in its history that horses were not part of the landscape for such a long period. Welcome back horses - the Park just wasn’t the same without you!
Background information
On Friday 24 August 2007, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) announced that cases of Equine Influenza were detected at the Centennial Parklands Equestrian Centre. The Equestrian Centre was immediately placed under quarantine by the DPI. During this time, the Trust observed appropriate protocol by referring all public enquiries to the DPI. The DPI is managing this issue at a state-wide level and provides the most up-to-date information to members of the public.
For the duration of the quarantine order, the Centennial Parklands Equestrian Centre was not open to the general public. Horses were not permitted to leave the Centre and therefore they were not permitted into Centennial Park. Furthermore all horse-related children’s holiday and educational programs were suspended for the duration of the quarantine order.
During this difficult time, the Trust worked tirelessly in support of our equestrian community. The Trust would like to take the opportunity to thank DPI staff for their support and the equestrian community at the Centre for their patience and cooperation.
Are there still restrictions?
Centennial Parklands, including Centennial Park, Moore Park and Queens Park, may be subject to zone restrictions. To find out more about which zone currently applies to the Parklands click here.
