Ausgrid Electricity Cable Project

Capital Works Project

Project Name: Ausgrid Electricity Cable Project
Location: Centennial Park and Moore Park
Project Timing: June 2011 to July 2012

Project Description

Ausgrid is installing new 132,000 volt underground electricity cables between Surry Hills and Rose Bay to supply electricity to the new Rose Bay and Waverley zone substations. This is part of Ausgrid’s plans to replace equipment and meet the community’s future power needs.

Ausgrid has undertaken site investigations and liaised with the community since 2009 to identify a suitable route and refine the concept design of the cable project.

The new cables will be installed about 1.5 metres below the surface, mainly under local and main roads along the nine kilometre route. Part of the cable route travels through Centennial Parklands (see map below).

The first stage of work involves excavating a trench and laying conduits (plastic pipes) to house the new electricity cables. The cables are later fed into the plastic conduits from underground ‘joint bays’ which are built at regular intervals along the cable route.

Work in Centennial Park

Ausgrid has completed trenching and laying conduits in Centennial Park.  The next stage of work involves pulling the new electricity cables through these conduits and joining them together.

The underground joint bay which was built on the eastern side of the park between Loch Avenue and Robinson Drive will be reopened for about five weeks to install and join the new electricity cables. A pit will also be excavated near the Federation Valley toilets to help pull the cables through the conduits. This work is scheduled to occur during May and June 2012. The work sites will be surrounded by fencing during this period.

After the cables have been installed and tested, the bicycle lane affected by trenching will be permanently resurfaced.

The underground joint bay which was built in Lang Road, near the Jervois Avenue gates, will also be reopened for about five weeks from Monday 14 May 2012. The Jervois Avenue gates will be closed throughout this period.

Works in Moore Park

Ausgrid has completed trenching and laying conduits in Kippax Field, Driver Avenue and Lang Road. The next stage of work involves pulling the new cables through these conduits and joining them together.

The underground joint bays which were built in Kippax Field and Driver Avenue will be reopened during May and June to install the new cables. Pulling pits have been built in Driver Avenue and Lang Road (just west of the Cook Road intersection) to help pull the cables through the conduits.

Work hours are from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday. These work sites are surrounded by barriers 24 hours a day and there are changes to local traffic conditions. Please observe the signs and follow the directions of traffic control personnel.

Driver Avenue will be closed to through traffic during work hours from Friday 18 May to Friday 25 May (excluding the weekend). Access Allianz Stadium, Sydney Cricket Ground, Fox Studios and Hordern Pavilion will be available via Moore Park Road.

Ausgrid is working closely with all stakeholders to minimise the impact of the project on events in the Moore Park precinct.
