Visitor Safety Program - Cyclists and Vehicles

Stage 4 of the Centennial Parklands' Visitor Safety Program has started today. This stage will target vehicle and bicycle safety within the Parklands.
What is the Visitor Safety Program ?
The Visitor Safety Program commenced in October 2005 and is a comprehensive public health and safety initiative that aims to ensure Centennial Parklands vast array of park visitors and user groups can enjoy the use of the Parklands and its facilities in a safe and harmonious manner.
Everyday Centennial Parklands attracts a complex mix of people, vehicles, bicycles, horses, dogs and like any of the great parks in the world, the Parklands has rules and regulations to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors.
Apart from safety for visitors, these rules also help us protect the Parklands’ plant and animal life.

What have Stages 1-3 covered?
Park Rangers and Ranger Security Officers have successfully completed three stages of the Visitor Safety Program, being:
- Phase 1 - Speeding Vehicles
- Phase 2 - Cyclists
- Phase 3 - Dogs
What will Stage 4 cover?
Stage 4 will focus on vehicle and bicycle safety in the Parklands. Specifically, it will target:
- Failure to comply with stop signs;
- Driving / overtaking in the shared lane around the perimeter of Grand Drive;
- Motor vehicle speeding;
- Cyclists on footpaths;
- Cyclists without helmets; and
- Cyclists travelling contra flow to vehicle movement.
Stage 4 will involve a monitoring stage to educate and inform park users with the relevant regulations and a cautioning stage to warn and officially caution park users who fail to adhere to the regulations relevant to this project.
Immediately following the cautioning phase enforcement and the issuing of infringements will take effect.
The timeline for Stage 4 is:
- Monitoring: 2 October 2008 – 22 October 2008
- Cautioning: 23 October 2008 – 26 November 2008
