Sports field renovation program underway

17 September 2008

The Trust has completed Stage One of its 2008 Sportsfield Renovation Program - being the spraying of sportsfields across the Parklands.

Stage Two (photos below) is now underway and should ensure all fields are ready for the start of the summer sports season on 4 October 2008.

What is the sports field renovation program about?

In order to ensure the the sports fields across Centennial Park recover from their heavy winter sports usage, and are ready for the start of the summer sports season, the Trust undertakes an annual program of weed spraying and surface works. These latter works include weed spraying, top dressing, fertilising and extensive levelling works on some fields.

Spraying works in Brazilian Fields (Centennial Park) and Queens Park involve the use of the herbicide Destiny which is used to control Bindii and Onion Grass,  which are quite prevalent in these areas. Subsequent spraying  Centennial Park and Moore Park use both Destiny and Spearhead to control both Bindii and Broadleaf weed species.

All spraying works are undertaken at night to minimise disturbance to park users and signage erected in accordance with statutory requirements and the Centennial Parklands Pesticide Management Plan.

The herbicides to be used are safe to humans and dogs but like any such liquid you need to be careful with it. The Trust's Pesticide Management Plan, a statutory requirement, outlines their safe use and application.
