Proposed Australian and Korean War Memorial announced

14 June 2008

The Premier of NSW, the Hon. Morris Iemma, MP, has agreed to provide State Government land for the construction of a memorial to commemorate the Korean War.

Aerial Map of proposed Australian Korean War MemorialThe memorial site is located at the northern end of Moore Park, a highly significant public parkland area less than 5km from the centre of Sydney. The Park is heritage listed as a place of national significance to the Australian people due in part to its historic setting as a place for significant national events.

The memorial commemorates the Australian and Korean veterans of the Korean War (1950 – 1953).

It is a memorial that honours a friendship forged through war, between two different countries, cultures and communities. The memorial will be a place that remembers the war with dignity and in so doing honours the hope of future peace. It will be a place of significance; a place that brings people together for ceremonies and cross-cultural celebrations, and will remain accessible to all park users.

The memorial design was the result of a design competition held in 2007. The memorial organising committee now seeks feedback from the community prior to lodging a development application with the City of Sydney Council in July 2008.

The memorial is being funded jointly by the NSW Government, Veterans groups and the Korean community of Sydney.

The project will be completed in 2009.

Community Information Session

An information session will be held between 10am and 12pm, Saturday 28 June 2008 at the Rotunda, Moore Park West. The session will be facilitated by Elton Consulting.

There will be an informal presentation about the memorial and members of the project team will be available to answer questions. All are invited to attend.
