Centennial Park Hosts ‘The World’s Greatest Pram Stroll’
On Sunday 28 October 2007, the early morning silence of Centennial Park will be broken by the whirring sound of prams being pushed around a 3km walking circuit as Jessica Rowe (television presenter & currently on Dancing with the Stars with beyondblue as her chosen charity) leads hundreds of mums and bubs at the World’s Greatest Pram Stroll.
The World’s Greatest Pram Stroll was first held in Albert Park, Melbourne, by Parks Victoria in 2000. It has grown to be an annual event attracting 5000 mums, dads & families.
The event highlights the many challenges that can arise after childbirth, including social isolation and postnatal depression, and encourages new mums to get out into the fresh air, meet other mums from their local area, and exercise in a healthy environment.
This year will be the first time the Pram Stroll will be held in Sydney.
'The event addresses growing issues associated with parenthood, and we see the Pram Stroll as one way of providing support to this market,’ said Steve Corbett, Director and Chief Executive of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust.
‘The ability to provide an environment where we can encourage health and well-being is invaluable. And, together, with the support of the relevant groups and associations, we can try and make a difference and encourage positive steps forward for this focus group (mums, dads and babies),’ said Mr Corbett.
The event will be supported by Jessica Rowe who will set in motion the pram stroll and then walk with the mums.
‘Being a mum is the best thing I’ve ever done, but it’s also the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Soon after my darling girl was born, I was diagnosed with PND (post natal depression)- so I understand how important it is to reach out and get support. The Pram Stroll is a wonderful way of linking up with other mums and sharing your experiences,’ says Ms Rowe.
The pram stroll will have a speaker’s tent set-up for new parents to hear and learn from a range of different health professionals, charity organisations and other support groups. There will be entertainment for children including a jumping castle, model gliders and kite-making. In addition, a range of food and drink will be on offer.
