Adopting a tree a huge success

On Sunday 31 July 2006, Centennial Parklands, the Centennial Parklands Foundation and the community joined together to celebrate a special Tree Dedication Event Ceremony on the 10th anniversary of National Tree Day.

This highly successful fundraising event was held to support the vital work of the Centennial Parklands Tree Replacement Program.

The response was fantastic,' said Ms Margaret Varady, Foundation member. 'ue to the unprecedented support form the public, we now have over 40 magnificent native Sydney red gums ‘adopted’ by members of our community that have been planted along Carrington Drive. This tremendous show of support has raised almost $25,000 for the Tree Replacement Program'.

The Centennial Parklands Tree Replacement Program is in its early stages and has an ambitious aim of replacing, modifying or strengthening up to 60% of the existing 15,000 trees over the next 20-30 years. Many of the older trees are nearing the end of their lifespan. These trees will need replacing, with many others requiring continual effort and care to stay healthy in today’s urban environment.

'We need to replace our tree population by at least 160 trees per year to preserve this asset for future generations' said Steve Corbett, Director and Chief Executive. 'he ceremony in many ways reflects what the Centennial Parklands Foundation stands for - the fostering of commitment and support to the Parklands, allowing the community to directly contribute to its future'.
