Griffins back on guard at Centennial Park

Centennial Park will soon be reunited with its concrete griffins, removed 30 years ago for protection from vandalism and restoration.

NSW Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation Sandra Nori said the return of the two statues on Thursday marked a great day in the history of Centennial Parklands.

“To see the return of these lovingly-restored creatures gives a sense of the Parklands as they looked many years ago,” Ms Nori said.

Of considerable heritage significance, the griffins were manufactured by Villeroy and Boch and are made of ceramic.

Documentary evidence obtained from the manufacturer’s gallery in Germany assisted Heritage Design Services at the Government Architects Office to accurately reconstruct the statues.

“These two magnificent creatures will once again guard the statue of Sir Henry Parkes as diligently as they guarded their gold in ancient mythology,” Ms Nori said.

On Thursday 7 April March 2005 at 2pm, the griffins will be lowered on to sandstone plinths on Parkes Drive.
