The Centennial Parklands Community Consultative Committee met at the Parklands Office, Centennial Park.
The meeting covered a range of issues and updates relating to Centennial Parklands including: the community and media reaction to the Good Vibrations Festival; and feedback from precinct meetings.
With regard to the Good Vibrations Festival, the Community Consultative Committee wishes to put on record:
- The CCC understands the need for Centennial Park to raise 90% of its own budget through private means and that organised private events in the Park grounds are one way to achieve this.
- The CCC is strongly in favour of the Park being available for all members of the public, including for appropriate private events, provided that each group using the park does so in a way that is compatible with values of the Centennial Parklands.
- The CCC is of the view that some uses of the park, and some events, are not compatible with values of the Centennial Parklands.
- Not all events are the same – and in some cases, where the negative impacts are likely to be significant and difficult to manage, events should not be allowed to use the parklands.
- The CCC is concerned by the impact of the Good Vibrations Festival on the standing of Centennial Park in the local community.
- The volume of negative feedback received following the Good Vibrations event indicates that the Trust should reconsider which events are allowed to use the Park grounds. The Trust should affirm that events that it chooses to allow in the Park are compatible with values of the Centennial Parklands.
A report and feedback from the meeting will be tabled at the next meeting of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust on 25 March 2009.
