The Discovery Garden

The Discovery Garden is a creative, educational component of the Education Precinct that has been created to enhance the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust's (Trust) Education Excursions.

This component comprises a range of various ecological communities, compost bays, recycling bays, table gardens with access to view under-soil, a worm farm and archaeological dig site.

A future expansion of this area will include a large-scale water catchment model.

Possible uses

The Discover Garden will primarily by used by the Trust's Education and Interpretation Rangers to teach children and adults on public and education programs about urban horticulture, sustainable living, plant adaptations, ecological community types, recycling, composting and archaeology.

Features

The Discovery Garden features:

  • demonstration bays of six different ecological communities (rainforest, arid, Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, woodland, vegetable patch and epiphytes) that include cupboard doors below them that can be opened so that soil profiles, plant root systems and plant adaptations can be viewed
  • an archaeological dig
  • three compost bays (showing the various stages of decomposition)
  • a recycling demonstration area
  • a worm farm
  • eight vegetable gardens in corrugated iron troughs with bamboo arbours
