Cycling in the Parklands

Cycling in the Parklands

Centennial Parklands is one of the most cycling-friendly public spaces in Sydney, with over 700,000 cycling visits made each year.

Cycling has a rich history in the Parklands - in fact, in 1900 the Cyclists Carriage was opened in Centennial Park – 5 years before cars were allowed into the Park! And in 1908 the former Kiosk was refurbished into a Cyclists’ Pavilion.

Today cyclists are welcome in Centennial Parklands from sunrise to sunset, every day of the year. There are not only a range of dedicated cycle lanes and pathways around the Parklands, we are also a vital link between the City of Sydney's cycle network and the eastern suburbs cycle network - making the Parklands a key commuter space for cyclists as well.

Below are a number of cycling features and services, as well as rules and regulations to observe when cycling in these busy Parklands.

Shared cycleways

Cleveland St Cycleway in Moore Park, Centennial ParklandsWe have a number of new shared cycleways across the Parklands, primarily designed to provide safe and accessible links into the surrounding regional cycling networks.

Two of the more popular routes are the Queens Park cycleway, and the Cleveland St Cycleway in Moore Park.

Please remember that these are shared pathways with pedestrians.

Grand Drive cycle lane

Centennial Park's Grand Drive incorporates a 3.8 kilometre dedicated cycle lane. It is ideal for all levels of cycling experience. The cycle lane will allow you to safely circuit Centennial Park and access all the main entry and exit points of the Park.

We have a seven day-a-week cycle hire business located just off Grand Drive for anyone wanting to cycle but without their own bike.

We encourage the safe and courteous use of Grand Drive's cycle lane at all times. Please observe the 30 km/h speed limit and riding in packs above 16 is not permitted. It is also NSW law that cyclists must remain in a dedicated cycle lane if one is provided.

Learners Cycleway

Many generations of children have learnt to ride their first bike at Centennial Park’s Learners Cycleway.

Learners Cycleway in Centennial ParkThis extremely popular surfaced loop roadway is a one-way track with plenty of space for children of all ages to ride their bikes in complete safety.

The Learners Cycleway precinct also features an amenities block, barbecue and children's playground, making this one of the most family-friendly spots in the Parklands.

Please remember, all children must wear a cycle helmet on the Learners Cycleway, and parents must not park in the Grand Drive cycle lane to drop their children and bikes off.

Rules and regulations to observe

Like many parks around the world, Centennial Parklands has rules and regulations to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors. This is no different for cyclists. These simple rules and regulations are in place for the safety of both cyclists and other park visitors. Safety is our primary concern, and we enforce these rules and regulations under NSW legislation.

These are key rules and regulations that should be observed at all times:

  • Cyclists must observe the 30 km/h speed limit throughout the Parklands (unless otherwise notified).
  • Cyclist must wear bicycle helmets at all times when cycling in the Parklands.
  • Cyclists must observe stop signs.
  • Cyclists must not ride contra-flow when on a one-way road.
  • Cyclists must not ride in packs of more than 16 riders, or ride more than 2 abreast.
  • Bicycle racing is not permitted, unless specifically approved by the Trust as part of an event.
  • Riding a bicycle on a footpath is not permitted unless the cyclist is under XX years of age.
  • Cycling is not permitted on grass or environmentally sensitive areas due to the erosion and pedestrian safety issues.

Centennial Parklands Rangers are highly concerned about the safety of cyclists and other park visitors, and are able to stop and/or fine cyclists if they are not observing the above rules and regulations.
