Grand Drive Upgrade

Following completion of the Grand Drive trial and a comprehensive post-trial visitor feedback and survey process, the next stages of the Grand Drive upgrade have commenced. The revised upgrade aims to maximise benefits to Park users, minimise impacts on the existing heritage trees, upgrade access and safety for all users and improve the overall aesthetic of this significant heritage drive.

The works include:

  1. Underground services upgrade - inside the horse track
The Park had an aging and outdated underground services infrastructure. In particular the irrigation ring main which supplies pond water for irrigation throughout the Park was outdated and becoming a hazard. This project has:
    • Replaced the ring main
    • Provided a new potable water pipe for new bubblers in the Park
    • Provided electrical conduits for possible future communications needs
This project was completed in August 2005.
  2. Footpath upgrade
The footpath around Grand Drive underwent the following improvements:
    • The buried Heritage sandstone kerbing previously only seen on the western side of the Park was excavated and re-instated to restore the heritage kerb around the whole of Grand Drive. Footpath drainage was installed to ensure that large puddles do not occur after rain.
    • The path was reformed and re-sealed where required to meet access requirements.
    • The previous steel bollards were removed and replaced with new sandstone blocks which will act as both kerb and wheel stop. The heritage flush sandstone trim buried in this area does not meet access and parking safety standards, and has remained in the ground.
    • Eight new accessible seats and three new accessible bubblers were installed.
This project was completed in April 2006.
  3. Tree Planting – inside the horse track
A new line of trees, using species compatible with the existing heritage rows of trees, will be planted on the inside of the horse track. The trees will incorporate a mix of Australian and exotic species, and all will have a direct connection with Charles Moore or Joseph Maiden.

This project will occur during late summer and autumn of 2007 subject to funding.
